Getting tested is simple
SMA carrier testing is usually performed in consultation with your OB/GYN. Ideally this test should be taken before a couple conceives, as this gives them the most reproductive options should they be at risk of having a baby with SMA. However, many couples undergo carrier testing during pregnancy.
-
Make an appointment with your OB/GYN and request an “SMA Carrier Screen” through Athena Diagnostics.*

Please bring this to your appointment for your doctor to fill out. -
At your appointment, you will be asked to give a blood sample.

Your OB/GYN will follow up with the test results, usually within two weeks.
